Rio de Janeiro, 1946. Starts her artistic training in 1965 with Ivan Serpa in Rio de Janeiro Modern Art Museum (MAM). In 1969, she graduates from Rio de Janeiro Federal University in architecture; she does postgraduate studies in City Planning, in Holland and in England, having worked in this area in London (1973-1974). From 1975 to 1978, attends the Ceramics Course at Sir John Cass School of Art in London, where she opens her own studio and starts to teach Ceramics at Kensington Adult Education, ILEA. In 1981, moves her studio to Rio de Janeiro and continues teaching. This same year, “Sylvia Goyanna Studio” becomes a place where ceramists from Rio de Janeiro are formed. In 1986, a scholarship from CAPES/Fulbright for the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, in the United States, is a turning point in her work, since, after that, the sculptural potentiality of the ceramics is emphasized. In 1989, she attends a Sculpture course in Ingá, Niteroi, under the orientation of Haroldo Barroso, carrying on with her work in ceramic sculpture. From 1987 to 1991, she teaches at Art Factory at Santa Ursula University.
